How to Create a Mount! *Staring Yimir and Ogg!*

Postby Altnaharra » Sat Feb 25, 2012 4:23 am

Good evening fellow Crogenitors,

My name is Yimir!
For the most part, I myself am just a DNA-modified version of Savage.

Image

As per the instruction of Crogenitor Altnaharra, and as per request of Crogenitor Antilectual, I'm going to provide you a how-to on making yourself an Ogg, or any type of mount.
The reason why mounts aren't in game is because it's up to you; as Crogenitor, to create them.

* No, there is no unlockable mount that you get when you reach level 60; As I am more than happy to convince anyone who dares invite me to help beat level 4-4 or less.. .

For starters you will require:
Image
6x Thermic Mauler / 3x Ethereal Render / 4x Ethereal Flayer / 2x Gene Spliced Psuedopod

I'll explain more about each piece as we progress.

You could always use different pieces, this is just for a 'how-to' on building an Ogg. Hopefully granting you some Inspiration in the process! It's a fairly simple design that requires no asymmetry!
(Be thankful, you don't even want to know how long it took to edit Wraith..)

Image

I've removed the mount so you can see how Ogg is effectively all "one piece"
~ Minus the legs, and saddle: but we'll get to that in a minute.

The Thermic Mauler doesn't seem like much when you first encounter it in the item-shop or as a drop. However, it's editor capabilities are very strong, I tend to buy at least six every time I see them in the item shop, the next time they come up I will probably buy about twenty or more.
(but that is just my nature)

The greatest attribute about the Mauler is; That they can have any 'starting item' placed on them.
When I say 'starting item' what I am referring too is the BASE details that come with each Hero.
Which would be why I despise some heroes, and love others! Even though they may have a better variant ability.
(Jokingly why; I Yimir, Master of Beasts! am happy to have Enrage, instead of Healing sprite..)

Yet I Digress.. Some items cannot be placed onto other Pieces. Which is why the Thermic Mauler is a strong editor item. Ontop of that; It's original shape can be changed in many ways, it starts out as a hexagonal shape; thus can be meld into many different things.

Image
The "Enrage" varient of Savage starts with this Base item (the one between my legs) It resembles a
Biotic Engager (Don't get any ideas.. they seem to have changed the Biotic Engagers properties..)
HOWEVER, if it is a BASE item, then it will still work for our purposes.. as it can accomodate a lot of different items being placed onto it!

Image

A few more Mauler's were used to function as a tool to create the illusion of a "whole body"
They are placed onto the BASE item to help assist the overall Movement animations; not conflict with the legs during 'Idle' & 'running' animations. One of the base 'Spikes' is placed onto the backside, to fit the theme of the Spikes that are attached to the Ethereal Render.

The saddle could be any item you like really, it is unnecessary but definitely adds to the effect of a Mount. Just like wearing Super Awesome Goggles!

Image

Let's talk about the Ethereal Render. "The Legs". They are not attached to the BASE piece, they have been attached to various places on the origional models legs.
The front Render is attached to the front of my knee, the middle Render is attached to the back of my lower thigh.
Finally the Back Render is attached to my upper calf.

The reason is to create a very 'stock' like movement while in game. This way the Renders seem to move as if they were meant to be apart of the Darkspore world.
It can take quite a bit of time to get this 'correct' Amazingly with this set-up, all of the legs move as if they were an actual bug.
If you were to see it in game, you would be in awe. The character seems complete!
I have tweeked this after every mission I have participated in, and I am finally happy with the outcome.
(this was the most dificult part of the creation..)

** Note also, how the Renders are WAY above touching the ground. Savage himself is quite the slouch, depending on the character you are giving a mount. The height in which the legs will have to be from the ground will vary. (In game it currently looks flawless)

Image

This is the Rump side of Ogg, it was by far the easiest part of his creation, infact so easy it feels as though I cheated.. perhaps I could have done better, BUT, it serves it's purpose.
Place both Gene Spliced Psuedopods symetrically touching, one on top, and one on the bottom to create an abdomen.

Both of the Gene Spliced Psuedopods are connected to the BASE item here - even though they look like they are connected to the Mauler The picture shows the bottom one spread out so you can see that you are hiding the Thermic Mauler used as a Thorax.

Image

Finally we come to Ogg's Head.
The head itself is created using the Origional models 'spikes' & 'eyes'
The spikes being the most important part of the creation. They can be edited in many ways. Spikes are a very usefull editor item to be found on many heroes Base model.

They are attached to the Thermic Mauler being used as Ogg's frontal thorax/neck and are used to create his Head, Eyebrow ridge, Lower jaw, cheeks, tounge and of course just used as regular spikes!

As you can see, there are two upper "Sets of teeth", Ethereal Flayers placed basically side by side, This just makes the wide mouth look more fleshed out.

Image

The lower jaw has the last two sets of Flayers, one to make up the bulk of the jaw line, the other just to fill in the centre.

The Ethereal Flayer has an interesting property as an editing tool; Whatever you attach it to becomes alive.
When I say that I mean it begins to react to the idle movement and regular animations of the hero.
All in all it is a very cool effect! It makes Ogg become his own creature.

His mouth is grinding and his eyes are blinking! Not to mention, his legs are all moving on their own!

** The Flayer only effects pieces in such a way if it is placed facing tooth down.. I can't say why, because I don't know. All I know is this effect only takes place on the upper jaw only.

Finally this brings us to a conclusion! Yimir & Ogg

Image

Reunited again through the power of Crogenitor DNA modification!

I seriously hope this helps a few fellow Crogenitors out there get more out of Darkspore. I urge you to explore your options, as Darkspore offers a vast amount of opportuniy in character customization!

Um.. Looks like my thread was moved..
I don't consider this a Spotlight.. it has way more text than it does pictures..
I'm a little upset.. you cut me deep just now..
I spent a lot of time on this post.. The pictures are only there to aid the process.

It isn't as much about Yimir and Ogg as it is about the implementation of mounts, and to make it easier for those who would like to try it out.
The two of them as a reference just make things easier and more entertaining.. basically a mascot.
It just made more sense to post it near the other thread that was of semi-similar nature.

I'm over it.

Let's make the best of being in the Spotlight, and pimping your ride!

-----------------
Lets talk about another Base Item;

Image

This base item found on many characters is a Photon Force. (Again don't get any ideas, they seem to have changed the properties of the Photon Force, much like they did the Biotic Engager).

However if it is a Base model detail, you can still place an amazing number of other detail parts onto it without any problems.

Again placed in between the legs, attached to the groin of the character and built off of.
The pictue below is the finished product removed, to show it is all effectively one piece.

On a character such as Orion, you could attach jets to his tail for very interesting movement, to mimic something to the effect of hovering.

Image

End result;

While on the subject of the Base model detail Photon Force.

Maldri Alpha is equiped with a ton of them, they even stack onto each other. This by far allows Maldri to have the most Editor friendly opportunity out of all the hero selections possible. Not to mention all of the other starting base details he comes with, spikes, ridges, and flairs.

Not only do the Photon forces stack onto each other, but they have the ability to be pushed into and away from the model. This is key for the ability to be able to contol the movement that you get out of your details.

I mean seriously.. Look at how many he has:

Image

That's right. Nine! Pretty fantastic.

Well since this thread has been moved, I would love to invite everyone to the

Maldri Alpha Editing Challenge

Just for fun, it's not like there are prizes. Other than an internet High-Five from yours truly for submitting.

Another word on the Ethereal Flayer.

Used to make 'Teeth'. As mentioned above it adds movement to details when placed tooth facing downwards but not upwards. As puzzling as that is, there is a way to get around that if you would like the bottom teeth to move as well.

Image

It requires you to attach the bottom Ethereal Flayer to either the Bottom Jaw of the actual Hero model. Or to a piece connected to the bottom Jaw of the Hero model. Just that simple!

Unfortunately in the case of Ogg, the new head is nowhere near the initial hero models jaw, making this an impossibility.

For Ogg's lower jaw: Couldn't you just shrink down an ethereal flayer and hide it at the bottom of the jaw, or put on some sort of spiky beard to make the lower jaw move?

Don't expect him to answer, I heard from some guy on another thread that Altnaharra was banned from the forums. I don't know why.
