I recently obtained a limited edition version for Darkspore. Is the key at the top of the manual paper the key to get the limited edition stuff?

For me, it was all one key. When logging in in-game for the first time when it asks for your key. Inputting that key enabled me to play and gave me the limited edition items. I would assume that that's the same for you.
